Scrapbooking 'rock star' gets drummed off stage

Disgruntled scrapbookers besieged the Creating Keepsakes chat room threatening to cancel subscriptions, boycott and sue. Scrapbooking bloggers called it "Hall of Fame-Gate." They compared it to the performance drug controversies involving baseball player Barry Bonds and track star Marion Jones.

At first, Contes found the uproar amusingly absurd. She replied on her blog. "Apparently, many lives have been destroyed by this catastrophe."

Her post prompted a barrage of responses on message boards on sites such as Scrapsmack and Twopeasinabucket. One message thread about her received more than 1,255 comments.

"I guess her response is 'dignified' if you live in the same trailer park as she does."

She "doesn't have a moral bone in her body."

Mortified and hurt, Contes stopped scrapbooking.

There are two built-in screens - one for each eye - as well as integrated Ultimate Ears earbuds. The resulting output makes the user feel as if he or she is sitting in front of a big screen TV and not on a bus or plane. The addition of a sunglass lens is meant to make them more versatile and, ultimately, make them a little less nerdy looking.

Smokers Protest Illinois Smoking Ban

The Eagles Hall in Benton, IL was once a smokers paradise; not anymore. "They took our of our basic rights away. I don't want them taking anymore away," says Mohr. He used to enjoy smoking two packs a day with ease. "When I can't smoke especially at work, I'm eating constantly so I don't need to do that." These frustrations. . . prompted him to start the petition.Mohr says his motivation isn't all about habit, it's more about personal freedoms. So far, 3,500 people have signed his petition. Along with personal freedoms, Illinois Restaurant owners say the smoking ban is bad for business. At Sandy's Bar & Grill in Benton, the manager says they've lost about 30%. "They're either not coming in at all, or they come in to pick up an order to take out," says the manager, Kelly Mandrell. Tips for Eagles Club bar tender, Carol Scott, are down $40.00 a night. "It hurts," she says. But Illinois lawmakers are hoping this ban will save lives. It's predicted the ban will drop lung cancer cases in Illinois by 19% and heart attacks by 8%.

Only a few ideas will make it to lawbooks

Even a bill languishing on the docket can be useful in convincing voters that a politician labored in Topeka on behalf of common sense and family values and against wasteful spending and bureaucracy.

Plugging away

Hensley said he might contribute to the scrap heap. He will renew sponsorship of a bill prohibiting legislators from lobbying for two years after leaving office. Jeopardizing the income of retired politicians is unpopular, but he is undeterred.

"There ought to be a grace period," Hensley said.

Pyle will mirror that persistence with a proposal to join more than 20 other states in development of a volunteer state defense force that would respond to emergencies. His idea floundered last session, and the proposal is opposed by the Kansas National Guard and the governor.

Being 'green': Practical, possible... and profitable?

Derbyshire County Council accounts for around 16 million copies and printouts per year and Ricoh will plant 1,600 saplings per year in an attempt to offset carbon emissions.

And that's just one way the printer/copier industry is trying to distance itself from a close association with deforestation.

Wagland argues that with paper "a necessary evil" it is actually the vendors who are working to cut down on paper wastage again something which presses the cost and social responsibility buttons of their customers.

He says: "Paper waste is probably the biggest item in any company's landfill and waste costs. And copiers and printers are the fastest growing area of energy consumption."

Kennard adds that it may actually be the recently well-publicised hikes in energy bills which force companies to recognise the savings which can be made.

Congress: Incremental Reform, Trafficking

A USA Today/Gallup Poll conducted July 6-8, 2007 reported that over 60 percent of respondents considered illegal immigration very or extremely important (www.pollingreport.com/immigration.htm). An NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll done June 8-11, 2007 found respondents evenly divided over whether immigration helps the US more than it hurts the US. However, large majorities favor new fines on employers who hire illegal immigrants and more fences and agents on the Mexico-US border. A majority of respondents opposed giving unauthorized foreigners who paid fines and satisfied other requirements legal immigrant status. At the same time, a majority also agreed that it is not realistic to deport most of the unauthorized foreigners in the US. Los Angeles police confronted a group of Spanish-speaking demonstrators in MacArthur Park calling for legalization in May 2007, resulting in casualties.
