| Which is better? Not a simple question
Bits of plastic found in the stomachs of Laysan albatrosses at Midway are a prime example. But paper isn't necessarily the better choice. Paper bags mean trees were cut down somewhere, and energy expended to transport and manufacture them. The Energy Information Administration (the statistics arm of the U.S. Department of Energy) says it takes 20 to 40 percent less energy to manufacture plastic grocery bags than paper ones. Since plastic is lighter, it is more efficient to transport, says the EIA, while the delivery of the same amount of paper would require seven more trucks. Biodegradable bags made of cornstarch seem like a better choice, but at the same time, they require air and light to break down, which is not likely in a landfill. Growing corn also requires energy that would need to be calculated into its carbon footprint, according to environmentalists.
Mikhail Sergeyevich Gorbachev
Officials of the Zavorovo state farm near Moscow had prepared carefully for the big day last August. They had even built a special staircase to spare their distinguished visitor the indignity of climbing down a hill to the potato fields below the main road. Mikhail Gorbachev would have none of it. Stepping out of his ZIL limousine, he gave the staircase a dismissive wave and scrambled down the steep incline in his neatly pressed gray business suit, leaving his surprised entourage to run after him in full view of television cameras. At the bottom of the hill, Gorbachev asked the farmers, lined up beside their equipment like soldiers on parade, about the mood on the farm. "Good. Businesslike," came the replies. Gorbachev was not satisfied. "I always hear the same answer," he said. "[But] there are always problems." For example, he asked, was everything available "except for vodka," a teasing reference to his antialcoholism campaign.
Pevelski, Sharks rally past woeful Leafs
Mats Sundin's No. 13 jersey competed with Joe Thornton's No. 19 teal shirt as the most popular outfit on the concourse. After the Toronto fans loudly cheered "O Canada," their team scored in the opening minutes when Nabokov got caught behind his net. Sundin collected the puck and fed Antropov in the slot for his 17th goal. Kubina added a power-play goal early in the second period. San Jose had little offensive life until Marleau scored on a slap shot that deflected off Toronto defenseman Hal Gill's stick in the slot early in the third period. Marleau has disappointed coach Ron Wilson this season, scoring just eight goals - including none in the Sharks' previous seven games. Rivet's tying goal went through several players in front, giving the defenseman three goals during a four-game scoring streak.
Hip-Hop Rumors: Was Obama Robbed? Soulja Boy Goes OFF!...
If that alone isn't crazy enough, the damn fool was living in a house with their mutha freakin' decomposing bodies for TWO WEEKS. She was arrested just yesterday and officials are holding her crazy a** without bail. Here is the CNN Report: The victims, who range in age from 5 to 17 years, are thought to be her daughters. Their bodies were found when U.S. marshals served an eviction notice at Jacks' apartment in southeast Washington, D.C. Court documents say Jacks identified the victims as her daughters Brittany Jacks, 17; Tatianna Jacks, 11; N'kiah Fogle, 6; and Aja Fogle, 5. Earlier Thursday, Mayor Adrian Fenty said the bodies' decomposition has hindered their identification, although they were believed to be Jacks' children.
Portsmouth warn Toon against new Harry bid
I would have let him stay until the end of the season. 'The players let Allardyce down. The displays has been abysmal - probably some of the worst I have seen in 20 years.' Your views on this story? Email newsdesk@soccernet.comJoin the discussion on our Message Boards .
Laurie David: One Seriously 'Inconvenient' Woman
A few years ago, Eric Alterman wrote a big article for The Atlantic Monthly on Hollywood activism. He took exception to the fact that back then, she was using a private plane — while publicly urging greater fuel economy. But Alterman does believe David has made a big difference. "If you judge Laurie on how one citizen holding no office has managed to reach millions of people, then she deserves an enormous amount of credit," he says. "After Al Gore, she's probably done more than anyone in America." And then there are the ripple effects of David's work. The smart-alecks at South Park parodied her in an episode called "Smug Alert." And the comic Sarah Silverman recently spoofed the Oscar-winning An Inconvenient Truth. "I was thrilled," David says. "Anytime anyone spoofs anything on global warming, it's good — it gets the word out." David says there's nothing altruistic about her mission — that on a personal, self-interested level, she's simply terrified about the effects of global warming.
